The basics

  • Is SharedSoul a therapist?
    No. SharedSoul is a reflective tool that uses AI trained in real therapeutic frameworks. It can help you understand yourself and the people you care about, but it's not a substitute for licensed therapy, medication management, or crisis intervention. If you're managing depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, or any mental health condition, please work with a qualified clinician. SharedSoul can sit alongside that work.
  • What if I'm in crisis right now?
    Call or text 988 (US/Canada) or your local emergency number. If a call isn't safe to make, text HOME to 741741 (Crisis Text Line, US/CA/UK/IE). Internationally, findahelpline.com lists crisis lines worldwide. SharedSoul also has a /safety page with crisis resources for sexual assault, domestic violence, and child safety.
  • How do I start?
    Most people start with Self-Analysis — about 12 minutes of conversation with the AI builds a real picture of how you work (attachment patterns, cognitive habits, emotional reflexes). That profile is then used to personalize your Ladder lessons and Shared Space mediation. The dashboard has six orbs — Self-Analysis is the recommended first one.

Privacy

  • Who can see what I write?
    Only you, by default. Your private conversations, your Mirror profile, your reflections, your time capsules — all live behind your account. When you invite a partner into a Shared Space, each of you still has a private thread with the AI. The shared room only opens when both of you go through a warm-up and consent to it.
  • Do you train AI on my messages?
    No. We never use your content to train AI models, and we never sell your data. The AI uses your messages only to generate replies and build your personal Mirror profile for you.
  • Is SharedSoul HIPAA-compliant?
    No. SharedSoul is not a HIPAA-covered entity and is not designed to hold Protected Health Information (medical records, insurance details, clinical chart data). For anything that needs HIPAA protection, please use your clinician's patient portal.
  • Can I delete everything?
    Yes — at any time. Go to Account → Delete account, and all of your data (messages, profiles, subscriptions, voice sessions) is permanently removed. You can also export everything we have on you before deleting if you want a copy.

Shared Spaces

  • How do Shared Spaces work?
    Each person in a Shared Space has their own private thread with the AI. When you're ready to open up to each other, you both go through a 5-step warm-up (what's true now, what you're hoping for, what you're nervous about, plus a co-built ground-rules pick) — and only then does the shared room open. Either person can pause it any time and return to private threads.
  • Will my partner see what I wrote in my private thread?
    No. Your private thread is yours. The AI in the merged room uses both partners' contexts to mediate, but never quotes either side directly to the other. Anything you want your partner to see, you send yourself (with the AI's help if you want — the Soft-Emotion Translator, the Repair Architect, etc.).
  • What if the merge isn't going well?
    Tap Pause anytime in the merged room — 90-second cooling break (the actual physiological emotion-peak window per DBT research), plus three guided private questions to help you re-center before re-engaging. Or end the merge entirely and go back to private threads. Nothing is locked in.

Billing & subscriptions

  • What does Pro vs Couple give me?
    Pro ($20/mo) unlocks unlimited AI conversations, premium voices for read-aloud, personalized Ladder lessons, and full Speech Therapy history. Couple ($49/person/mo) adds Shared Spaces, the Mediation Hub (Cycle Map, Witness Mode, Repair Architect, Time Capsule, Shared Rituals), and merged-room mediation. Both partners need Couple to use the shared features.
  • How do I cancel?
    Go to /billing, find your active subscription, click Cancel. Access continues until the end of the current billing period — no surprise mid-cycle cut-off.
  • Can I get a refund?
    Yes — within 14 days of an upgrade, if you have not used the additional capacity. Email hello@sharedsoul.org and we'll pro-rate it.

Speech Therapy

  • Where does the audio go?
    Nowhere. Transcription happens entirely in your browser using the Web Speech API. Only the resulting text (plus duration) is sent to the AI for analysis. The raw audio is never uploaded to our servers.
  • Why are some sessions saved and others not?
    Every completed session saves automatically — you'll see them in the 'Your history' section at the bottom of the Speech Therapy page. Tap any row to re-open the full analysis. They also appear in your main Chats history under the 'Speech Therapy' filter.
  • Live transcript isn't working — what do I do?
    Speech recognition requires browser support (Chrome / Safari work best). On iPhone, make sure you're using Safari (not Chrome on iOS, which uses Safari's engine but with different speech-API access). Make sure microphone permission is granted in your browser settings.

Voice & accessibility

  • Can I have everything read aloud?
    Yes — every AI message has a Listen button, as do every Ladder lesson section, Mirror profile reveal, and Speech Therapy result. Pro and Couple subscribers get premium AI voices via ElevenLabs; Free uses the built-in browser voice.
  • Can I copy AI text?
    Yes — every AI output has a Copy button next to the Listen button. Works on phone, tablet, and desktop.
